My grandparents, proud owners of forest land in the Southern United States, made a lasting impression on me. They’d take me there to see the expansive pine trees they grew. During one summer, I helped plant and maintain the rows of these trees. In a youthful mistake, I accidentally mowed over a young pine. Surprisingly, my grandfather didn’t get upset. Instead, he calmly told me that a single tree in a forest was not worth him getting upset with me over. He explained that the value in that single tree came because it was part of the larger forest. The forest was valuable because it would provide our family with money when the lumber was harvested, and with countless others with value from what the wood would create. He sealed the lesson with reminding me that the forest was now part of my legacy as well.
Spending time with my grandfather was was formative in many ways, but his perspective on land was something that I’ve never forgot.
